Resident Teaching Artist
Jen Graham, MFA CMA RSME/T is a movement educator and artist who creates inclusive and exploratory spaces to instigate shifts in awareness, perspective, and pattern through embodied experiences. Using innovative and sometimes unconventional approaches, she promotes curiosity, investigation, connection, and understanding.
Jen holds both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts Degrees in Dance Choreography and Performance from the University of Maryland. She also holds her Certification as a Movement Analyst from the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, and is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist through the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association, upholding their high level of professional standards and ethics in her work. Currently, she is also completing her Certification as a Nutrition Coach through the National Association of Sports Medicine to more holistically support her students and clients.
For thirteen years Jen was the founding Owner and Director of Project C Studios, a private dance school and performance space, where she built a highly respected national standards based dance program, produced countless concerts and community events, developed an accomplished and diverse faculty, and cultivated generations of students who have gone on to receive distinguished scholarships, attend prestigious college programs, and continue to forge successful professional careers within the field. In the summer of 2019, Jen passed the school onto the next generation of leadership, and now continues to teach there regularly and serve as an administrative consultant.
Jen currently holds adjunct faculty positions at Carroll Community College, Howard Community College, and The Peabody Conservatory at the Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches movement, somatics, and dance technique courses for actors and dancers. She has also taught courses in dance and anatomy & kinesiology for the University of Maryland and the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, where she additionally helped develop online application courses of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System. While at UMD, Jen also partnered with their Neuro and Cognitive Science Program to create, co-direct, and pilot the DeLeComm (Developing Leadership Communication) program which incorporated somatic practices, non-verbal communication, and group dynamic skills to teach embodied leadership for optimal career success among PhD students. Independently, Jen continues to develop her work in the areas of leadership and communication, as well as functional movement coaching and therapeutic
practices for people seeking transformation and growth.
As a dance educator and artist, Jen specializes in Contemporary Modern, Jazz, and Structured Improvisation, while also having extensive training and teaching experience in other techniques as well. She has taught for over 20 years in the private sector and over five years in higher education, along with masterclasses and workshops at a variety of schools, festivals, and conferences including The Maryland State Dance Festival and The American College Dance Association Mid-Atlantic Conference. She has also created theatrical and commercial work for theatre companies and studios, where her choreography and coaching has won numerous awards and title recognitions. Additionally, she has performed and presented work along the east coast for more than 15 years, including The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Joe’s Movement Emporium, the Metlife Stadium (televised on CBS), and The Kennedy Center. She continues to pursue new creative ventures with the intent of shifting perspectives and bringing somatic practice into the foreground of process and experience.
Jen currently serves as the President of the Maryland Council for Dance and is actively engaged in research and partnership projects focused around somatics, movement education, and the connection between human psychology, group dynamics, and movement.
